Good Morning Fortunate Ones!
If you're reading this, you're probably pretty fortunate...
Think about it. You're educated enough to read, you have access to a computer, and better yet, the internet....and I'm willing to bet you even have a place to live and perhaps a job.... (well, except Leslie...jk) I guess we may sometimes forget, or blatantly don't give a shit, that we are more fortunate than others.
If you live near or in a city, you've probably been introduced to the homeless. Homeless people are a diverse bunch, that for one dozen reasons or another, can't afford a place to live, don't have a source of income other than pan-handling, and usually have a strange pungent odor.
Two major factors that I think contribute to homelessness:
1. Mental Illness - ever wonder why that homeless guy down the street is mumbling to himself, twitches, and has emotional outbursts followed by periods of silently staring into space? Well, one of the largest contributors to homelessness is the closing of mental facilities or releasing of patients due to budgetary reasons; FYI: most released/kicked out mentally ill patients don't get their engineering or MBA degrees and then contribute to the corporate infrastructure, nor have they developed the skills to adapt to that environment; thus business people who have the money to help, don't give a shit about them.
2. Poor Shitty Family: Perhaps homeless Tom grew up in poverty. Mommy & daddy were stupid losers, which further explained why they would give birth to a child given their financial & social situation, as well as not providing that child the stability and education they needed to adapt to the outside world. The child grew up with the wrong crowd without education or guidance, and then found that they could not make it in the workplace because of emotional, disciplinary, or education-related reasons.
It seems as though people have a problem with homelessness and choose to ignore it or just feed a bum some change when they are bothered. Out of sight, out of mind; just don't bother me while I'm drinking my caramel non-fat Machiato...
As a capitalistic society, we pretty much say "tough luck, get a job, and fuck off". However, this contradicts our silly "Christian-based" and socialist inspired "everyone should be happy" ideals. Should we give a shit? Should we give help? Should we give money?
I believe that you are a selfish prick if you give a homeless person ANY money.
You're not helping; you're just buying your way out of an uncomfortable situation and/or guilt, in efforts to feel like you're Mother Theresa. If you really wanted to make an impact, you'd give him an education.... you'd give him clothing... you'd give him something to eat or nourishment.... you'd give him a job... or you'd give the money to somebody who could provide him with those things...
Now I'm not saying there's an answer for homelessness, because there isn't an answer. But we can change our actions and perceptions of what is "help" to a homeless person.
By giving money to the homeless are we really helping them, or are we helping ourselves to feel better about their homelessness?
Do you think a society-wide attitudinal change could spur the fortunate to help those in need through education, training, and opportunity, or at least donate money to people who would be able to organize such an edeavor?
Give us your thoughts....
Don's thoughts right now: "I love coffee....."

Well who doesn't love coffee? Anyway I agree and disagree with the Big D on this one. The 30 year old Vietnam Vet (wait that math doesn't add up) asking for change on the exit ramp, doesn't get a damn thing from me. Neither do the "why lie, I need a beer" guys. However here in Colorado you get a lot of people trying to get to California or other places so throwing them a handful of change I think help them out. I don't know if they are homeless. Sure most of the cats out there are going to blow your money on crank, but if you can't tell who those guys are then you are an idiot. Yes it is better to go work at the soup kitchen on saturday morning but I don't have the time. I think directly giving money to the people who I think will spend it on some food and dropping off clothes at the local ARC isn't selfish, it's helping out where I can.

Donald, I have a job. I just don't get paid for it...I, uh, pay them for it. I work 20 hours a week interning in a juvenile facility for young girls -- drug addicts. Not to mention, I have planned a huge party with Warped Tour bands (for free), got a venue (for free), and have so far, had 173 people sign up under EMU in under 2 weeks. Not to mention, I go to grad school full time, all A's. And, everyone else, watch The Detroit News Sunday edition.... and the Ann Arbor News. They both ran a story on yours truly.
I agree with you about the "you are not helping if you give THEM money..", you are just encouraging them to keep panhandling. The only way they are gonna wake up and smell the shitstain is if they have no money. Then, maybe, they will get up off their asses and get a job. They need to learn responsibility.
Joe and I gave a homeless guy nachos once. He didn't want them.
As for the reasons...
You will see the census on homeless people is way high. (Yes, I said "way high".) The reason for this? The government/census bureau counts people over 18 still living under their parent's roofs as homeless. Technically, I am homeless. So is Giuliani. Even Dan B. is for a hot second, 'til he finds the house. HOWEVER, we are all attempting to better ourselves to drift in society.
I may be working toward being a Social Worker, but I think that everyone is responsible for his or her own actions.
I know of a certain person who's family was/is lazy. He has no interest in getting a job over minimum wage. That's due to family.
Mental Illness? Shit. Where the hell can you put them all? If they don't have money, they certainly don't have health insurance to afford meds. However, there is Medicaid.
I think that you should help out if it's a friend who lost everything in a fire that his wife set while trying to kill him. But, that's special circumstances.
The majority want a handout, but don't want to work for it.
P.S. Why in hell are there homeless people in the northern states? You'd think they'd all be south. After all, It's warm down there. (As long as they stay away from you, Don.)

Your second question:
No. Social Workers have been striving to do that for years. And, we make jack-shit for money. People don't dole out the cash. People want to keep money for themselves. And why shouldn't they? They have all earned it.
I think the only way that could be accomplished is if we had a dictator. Who cut off our fingers if we disobeyed.
Besides, as I used to watch those girls on Jenny Jones who were B.P.s and druggies, I was the same age. I just used to think, "More jobs for me later."
Selfish, yes.
Smart, absolutely.
We need to take care of ourselves before we take care of others. And, I think that if you want someone to finance it? Rob the Hiltons and the Spears' blind, and have at it. I bet the homeless could all find homes. And all the liquor in the world to drink.

Why so angry, Mr. Lippert? Do you own some Section 8 that I haven't heard about?

"Oh wouldn't it me niceee-a
If I could touch yo' body..
you know not every bodyy
Has gotta body like youuuuuu"
I wonder if George Micheal realize he was gay when he wrote that.
Did he even write it?
