Armed & Full of Fear!

Shalom my fellow chimps!

Let me just jump right into it:

Tampa Tribune, Tuesday October 18th, 2005:

"...Florida has more concealed weapons license holders than Texas, and the Tampa Bay region alone has more than the entire state of California... According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, there are 354,552 concealed weapons licenses in the state. That means one out of every 49 Floridians has a permit to pack heat.... Women make up 14 percent of concealed weapons license holders in Florida, according to the most recent statistics. Almost 39 percent of license holders are older than 50... 'I love having my gun with me,' said Nash, a widow. 'When I go to Tampa at night, I'm coming back late. It's a necessity. Here alone at night, it's a big comfort.'"

( http://www.tampatrib.com/MGBCB6LMXEE.html ) If you'd like to read the article

One simple phrase... "WHAT THE FUCK!?"

I'm no Michael Moore, but have we gone crazy? Is our society's mantra now "I bolster my self esteem with fake boobs, and I holster my Gloc to fight off the crude?"

Yes, when you go out there is a possibility that you'll be a victim of crime, and yes, women are more susceptible, and yes, old people are easy marks... but should we arm little old ladies with pistols?

Hypothetically, let's say our society figured out the way to control the masses is to create fear; fear of a god's wrath, fear of imprisonment, fear of death, fear of not being accepted, fear of crime, etc. Basically when people are scared, they look outward for direction and help, and what we give them is a pacifier of answers, like I don't know, "consuming a bunch of commercial talismen!"

I don't know about you, but statistics tell me that if there are more guns in the hands of the common American Idiot, I have a higher probability of taking a stray bullet or getting shot accidentally because soccer mom Jane decides to play crime stopper or I was walking to closely to some little old lady. Does that make me feel safer? No it does not. It's one thing if you've got a shotgun in your home, but carrying a concealed weapon is a completely different arena of responsibility.

How safe do yall feel knowing that little old ladies out there are packing a heater in their granny sacks? According to that article there are around 138,275 average Joes over 50 packin in Florida alone; and yes folks, that's 19,358 ladies over the age of 50 possibly carrying a Nina in their fanny pack! I don't trust these people driving their cars, much less having responsibility over a piece. You are trusting the decision making and physical capacities of people who are too paranoid and weak to defend themselves or to avoid suspicious situations, and you're giving them permission to carry concealed firearms! Recipe for disaster?

I think it's important to reiterate, these are "concealed permit weapons", not just your good ole' boy .22 rifle or shotgun for hunting permits; concealed weapon permits are for firearms that are ONLY meant for killing another human being and making granny feel safe.

It boils down to this:

"Is arming America with concealed weapons really the right answer to our obsession with fear?"

  • No. It isn't guns who kill people. It's people who kill people.
The scary thing about arming grandma with a gun? ...Does she know how to use it? She would probably end up shooting herself. Or, the "bad guy" would see her slowly reaching for her piece with her arthritic hands; and immediately know how to take her down. Come on, it can't be hard.
Or what if she forgot to load it? Or she was pulled over by a cop, and as she is reaching for her gun, puts her hand on the weapon, without informing cop she's packing?
Or, she sees a black man on the streets. Oh no, the fear. He trips, puts his hands on her shoulders to steady himself. She shoots him, because she doesn't know her ass from a hole in the ground.
Not to mention, the scariest monsters in our society (Dahmer, Gacy, Manson's girls) rarely used guns.
Guns don't kill people. PEOPLE kill people.

  • I meant to say reaching for her LICENSE..not her gun. I am not part of NWA here....sorry.

  • Ahhh NWA, what a great group. Anywho about the gun, whilst trying to purchase a liquor store I did a fair amount of research on the CCW(carry conceiled weapon). I would much rather have these people go to that class and learn that if they shoot someone they are probably going to jail, you wouldn't believe the rules about carrying your own gun. You can't even shoot someone attacking your wife/husband. If you are afraid of being attacked then you should take martial arts, but lazy america isn't going to do this. So the CCW classes and license, I feel is the next best thing. We either need to get rid of all of them, or go back to the Old west days. As for myself I would never get a CCW because I know I wouldn't be able to stop myself from executing people I deam unworthy of O2, but hey thats me.

Also, I'm getting(inheriting) a bunch of guns here in the next week, I'm thinking I might like to try hunting. There is a topic I would like to discuss, "when does hunting cease to be a spiritual quest?"

  • Dan wonders if can all just get along?...

If you can't get a gun away from an old lady you deserve to be shot.

Using the internet -the most reliable source of information in the history of human data gathering- I found some interesting info. FL violent crimes (including firearms related crimes) went down as CCW permits went up. And yes, we all know that correlation dosen't always mean causation.

Along the same lines, check out the following article http://www.catb.org/~esr/guns/gunslott.html. Same idea: older data.

I didn't find any info on the number of old ladies who have had their guns stolen.

  • Fear can work both ways. A criminal might hesitate to rob that old lady if they have to determine whether the bulge under her coat pocket is just a roll of Mentos or a Derringer pistol.

If a potential criminal is aware that one out of every 49 people has a gun on them, he/she might be less likely to commit the crime. The concept of concealed weapon is that no one should know who has a weapon. So in theory, that should increase the criminals' fear of their potential victim having a weapon and thus decrease certain crimes, without the gun ever having to be used. The potential threat of violence could be a deterrent to crime.

  • A few thoughts...the fastest growing crime in America is identity theft...good luck using your gun to prevent that crime...also if you relate this to actors operating in international relations with respect to arms its true that if you have a bigger/more guns than me then I probably will not mess with you but you can bet that I will do everything possible to try to match your firepower or offset it or just get a bigger gun...so back to criminals...how long before they start wearing bullet proof vests or just shoot you from behind giving you no chance to use the gun...or maybe they'll approach you first with gun in hand and once you reach for the gun you have they blast you with the gun they have. Having an armed society could lead to more trigger happy criminals...or possibly criminals realizing that they need more firepower.

  • "Is that a gun in your pants, or are you just happy to see me?"

Since you didn't get the "your mother" one, I'll give you a chance to redeem yourself on this one.
